Online coaching is a great concept that can give you the flexibility you may be looking for. Here are a few tips to help you get your online coaching career off the ground!
What’s Your Approach?
Every trainer has a different approach to training their clients and online coaching is no different. In my fitness career I’ve always been attracted to a more personal approach – and approach I used to venture into the online coaching waters.
If you’re looking to expand into online coaching, you have to decide what approach you want to take and stick with it. You must offer your clients the same thing online that you do in person, which can only be accomplished with consistency as you build your reputation. You can’t start online coaching if you don’t build up your in-person services first, so make sure you start there.
Think of it this way: You expect a commitment from your clients to help them reach their health and fitness goals. Online coaching requires your long-term commitment too. You don’t become an online success overnight.
Create a Presence Online
In my book, Your Fitness Career, I talk a lot about determining who you are as a trainer. If you want to expand to online coaching, then you need to take who you are as a trainer and build on it. Of course, a winning strategy is to create a presence online first. You need to work on a blog campaign that drives traffic to your website to establish yourself as an authority in your niche, then use that as a springboard for establishing an online coaching career. I recommend watching a few tutorials online about how to optimize your blog with SEO optimization.
Create a Strategy
Once you have a presence online, you can begin working with clients in order to develop your own approach to online coaching. There are a number of ways to accomplish this. In my online coaching business, I like to send full body workouts via email every day, then do a 5 to 10-minute call with my clients about five days a week in order to discuss progress, give wellness advice, and answer any questions they may have about the workouts I’ve sent for the week.
I like to look at my online coaching business as professional supervision for my clients. They may not meet with me in person, but I’m helping them to monitor their eating habits, keep track of their goals, and monitor their progress as they work toward a better version of themselves. And my clients have found a lot of success through my online coaching services!
Online coaching is something any fitness professional can do. It just requires a little extra work to establish yourself and get it off the ground!
