We live in the Internet era and this great big world has become a much smaller place since people are so connected. This creates a huge advantage for your fitness career as you can do a little online sleuthing to discover what other trainers are doing to successfully advertise their services. I’m not suggesting you copy another trainer’s business campaign, but I am suggesting that you look at what works for others and put your own spin on it! Here are a few of my top tips to help you promote your fitness business!
Get to Know Your Community
What works for one personal trainer in New York City may not work for a personal trainer in Des Moines. That’s because different places respond to differently to advertisements. You should do some online research to discover what is working in your corner of the world and use that as a starting place for your own promotions.
Your fitness career isn’t about convincing people to train with you. Instead, it’s about helping people to convince themselves they need to work with you to reach their health and wellness goals. It’s important to brainstorm creative ways to get your name out there so that when people think about starting to work with a personal trainer, they think of you.
In my book, Your Fitness Career, I delve into the ins and outs of advertising. When you’re talking about ways to advertise to people, you shouldn’t be thinking about putting your name out there on blast. There’s only so much brochures and flyers can do. Plus, some people find direct advertising campaigns annoying – and you don’t want your name associated with that! I’ve found the best advertising is to link your name to an idea of concept – something fun that people are intrigued by or relate to.
In the past, I’ve used fitness destinations to create buzz and promote my business. I advertised a fitness trip to Brazil that was very successful for me. I not only received interest from potential clients about the trip but also about training with me at home. I thought outside the box when it came to advertising and it worked!
Another great way to promote yourself is to establish yourself as an authority. If your budget allows, you should look into advertising in a local magazine. But you shouldn’t simply create an ad with your name and services. Instead, write an article to educate the readers about something you’re an expert in. That gets your name out there while informing people about an interesting topic. Sure, it may be marked as paid advertising, but that doesn’t diminish the value of the information or the fact that it gets your name out there.
Don’t be afraid to take chances and get creative with the ways you promote your fitness career. I’ve done everything from creating magnets to teaming up with other trainers to split the cost of advertising. It worked for me and it can for you too!
